NSX/vCNS/vCD – “Unplanned Reset” Operational Risk

This post is about mitigating the “unplanned reset” operational risk of the “Control-Alt-Delete” button in the vSphere Web Client/C# Client console for all Linux VMs, including NSX Manager, NSX Controller, vCNS Manager and vCD.

All Linux Administrators will be aware that pressing Control-Alt-Delete on the Console will reset the Linux OS immediately unless disabled in the Linux Operating system.  However, Windows Administrators are not aware of this, because they press the same key sequence to access the login screen.  Unfortunately, this behaviour is also true for some “hardened” virtual appliances such as NSX and vCNS.

vSphere 6.0 RC – Still Under NDA?

vSphere 6.0 RC was announced a few hours ago.  As a beta tester of vSphere 6.0 am I still under NDA? Rhetorical question, answer: Yes.

UPDATE: A few minutes after I posted this, VMware removed the post, but you can see it here.  There is also an article at The Register.  By the way, “RC” stands for “Release Candidate”.

During VMworld there were a lot of public references to the features of vSphere 6.0 in the keynote & breakout sessions.  Fast forward to the “RC” release today and VMware are providing additional feature information as part of the announcement.

vCD Installation Guide – Part 1 – Preparation

As part of my push to prepare for the VCAP-CID/CIA exams, I have been spending a lot of time with vCloud Director 5.1 in my lab.  I know it is not vCAC with NSX, but if you want to pass the VCAPs for Cloud, you will have to work with this configuration.
